Police in Zanzibar, Tanzania, are reportedly holding Joe McCann, a crypto trader and founder of the crypto fund, Asymmetric, for questioning after his fiancée died while the couple was on vacation.
McCann’s fiancée, Ashly Robinson, died in hospital after she was found a day earlier by hotel staff where the pair were staying, according to reports citing Tanzanian police.
Police have ruled Robinson’s death a suicide but said McCann is still being questioned, with his passport reportedly being held until autopsy results are complete.
Authorities said hotel staff reported the couple had a ‘misunderstanding’ and were separated, with McCann moved to a different room.
A staff member later found Robinson unresponsive in her room with a belt around her neck and alerted management, after which she was taken to hospital.
Robinson’s family has disputed the account, with her sister saying the circumstances ‘don’t make sense’ and noting she had appeared happy after celebrating her birthday and engagement just days earlier.
Joe McCann is the founder, CEO, CIO, and solo managing GP of crypto venture, Asymmetric, which changed its trading strategy last year after investor backlash tied to underperformance during a prolonged period of crypto market volatility.
Plans to take a Solana treasury company public under his leadership were also reportedly called off, weeks after he said the fund had lost 80% during the year.
