The new trading instruments encompass the Magnificent 7 technology leaders — Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Meta, and Tesla. Additionally, eligible international users can trade futures connected to SPY and QQQ, the widely-followed index funds representing the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 respectively.

Perpetual futures differ from traditional futures contracts by having no fixed settlement date. Traders can maintain their positions for an unlimited duration, provided they satisfy ongoing margin obligations.

All contracts utilize USDC for cash settlement, Circle Internet’s (CRCL) dollar-backed stablecoin. Physical delivery of underlying securities doesn’t occur.

Maximum leverage stands at 10x for individual company contracts. Index-tracking ETF instruments permit leverage extending to 20x.

Coinbase Bermuda, operating under Bermuda Monetary Authority oversight, delivers this service. Access is provided through Coinbase’s sophisticated trading interface, application programming interfaces, and its global exchange platform.

Market Forces Behind the Launch

Coinbase observes that appetite for continuous equity market access has surged dramatically — with much of this trading volume previously concentrated on decentralized networks.

Hyperliquid represents the largest decentralized competitor, having introduced S&P 500 perpetual futures just days ago. Hyperliquid has also experienced substantial trading volume in crude oil-related instruments amid ongoing Middle Eastern tensions.

Coinbase aims to capture this market by offering a regulated, centralized infrastructure that appeals to institutions seeking greater operational certainty compared to decentralized alternatives.

Technical Architecture

The offering utilizes identical risk management technology that underpins Coinbase’s existing cryptocurrency derivatives operations. Traders benefit from cross-margining capabilities spanning perpetual futures and spot holdings.

This architecture enables market participants to deploy existing collateral across both digital asset and equity futures markets without establishing separate accounts or segregating margin resources.

For institutional participants, this unified approach significantly streamlines multi-asset risk oversight within a consolidated environment.

The product release reinforces Coinbase’s strategic initiative to construct what the company describes as an “Everything Exchange” — a comprehensive venue accommodating cryptocurrencies, conventional securities, and innovative financial products.

Coinbase has systematically advanced this objective. In early 2026, the platform extended regulated cryptocurrency futures access across 26 European markets through a MiFID-compliant subsidiary.

The equity futures platform remains unavailable to U.S.-based traders. Coinbase hasn’t announced domestic availability plans, presumably reflecting regulatory complexities surrounding derivatives offerings in the American market.
