Toncoin (TON) is the native cryptocurrency of The Open Network, a decentralized blockchain platform designed for high scalability and transaction throughput. Its token economics are structured to support network security, facilitate decentralized operations, and incentivize participation across its ecosystem.

Issuance Mechanism

Toncoin was originally launched with an initial total supply of 5 billion tokens. The network currently operates under a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, where new tokens are progressively minted as emissions to reward validators for securing the network.

• Inflation Rate: The network has an annual inflation rate of 0.60%.
• Block Subsidies: New tokens are added to the reward pool through block creation subsidies. The network provides 1.7 TON for each masterchain block and 1 TON for each basechain block.
• Historical Distribution (PoW Givers): Unlike many PoS networks that conduct initial sales, 98.55% of Toncoin's supply was originally distributed via "Proof-of-Work (PoW) Giver" smart contracts. This unique phase allowed anyone to mine tokens by solving computational puzzles. This initial distribution phase was completed on June 28, 2022, when the last tokens were mined from these contracts.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

Toncoin serves as the primary utility token for all operations within the TON ecosystem.

• Transaction and Gas Fees: Users pay TON for all network transactions, including computation fees, storage fees, and fees for importing/exporting messages.
• Staking and Validation: To secure the network, users can operate as validators. This requires a minimum self-staked or nominated amount of 300,000 TON. Validators earn rewards from both the minted inflation (block subsidies) and a portion of the transaction gas fees.
• Nominator Pools: Tokenholders who do not wish to run a validator can participate by staking a minimum of 10,000 TON into nominator pools. These users earn a share of the validator's rewards based on a configured ratio.
• Governance: TON is used for on-chain governance. Tokenholders can vote on configuration changes, such as network fee adjustments. Voting power is typically determined by the amount of TON held ("Weighted balance") or on a "One wallet, one vote" basis.
• Ecosystem Payments: Toncoin is used as a medium of exchange for various services, including decentralized data storage (TON Storage), blockchain-based domain names (TON DNS), and TON Proxy.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

• The Locker Contract: A specialized smart contract called "The Locker" allows users to lock their coins for extended periods. This mechanism can be used to assign rewards for the locking action, encouraging long-term holding.
• Validator Cycles: Staked tokens are locked during the validation cycle, which lasts approximately 18 hours.
• Community Incentives: Programs like "The Open League" distribute millions of Toncoin (e.g., a 30 million TON budget for Season 1) through liquidity pool boosts, quests, and airdrops to incentivize active on-chain behavior rather than passive holding.
• Unlocking Schedule: There is no traditional "unlock schedule" or "vesting cliff" for the majority of the supply because the initial distribution was completed through the PoW Giver contracts in 2022. Consequently, the tokens are already largely in circulation or held by the entities that mined them. No further scheduled token unlocks for the core protocol supply are currently documented following the completion of the mining phase.
